Weekend Update #2

#WEEKEND-UPDATE

I'm not entirely sure where the weeks are going but here I am accelerating towards the holiday period. Truth be told I am a little checked out with work but there are still bits and pieces to churn through before I finish for the year.

My obsession this week has been Apple's HomeKit. I'm definitely a late embracer of the smart home scene, although part of that was deliberate as I wanted to see the market and products mature a bit before diving in. I've started by picking up a bunch of smart plugs; I've opted for the Meross Smart Plug based on the fact that Federico over at MacStories has had a good experience with them.

So far, so good for me. Very easy to set up and to integrate into Apple's Home app. I've set them up on a few of our lights in the bedroom and living room. There is almost no discernible latency on these things which was pleasantly surprising.

Unfortunately we've already got some basic Ring cameras and a doorbell around the house at my wife's choosing a few years ago. Ring cameras are not naturally compatible with HomeKit but there are some workarounds available from my brief searching around on the internet. Sounds like a project to keep me occupied over Christmas.

Listening…

I shared some brief thoughts on Knocked Loose's Kimmel performance earlier in the week, but I still haven't gotten around to listening to their new record.

I'm on a bit of a Lou Read streak at the moment. I've never really deliberately taken to searching out his work before. I've enjoyed both Transformer and Berlin; Berlin sounds like a more mellow compared to Transformer which explains why it perhaps wasn't as well received at the time of its release.

Playing…

No opportunities to game much this week. Despite my proclamations last week, I did in fact still go out and buy a new game. Spider-Man 2 on PS5 had the first decent discount I'd seen since its release so it felt like the right time to pull the trigger.

Watching…

Again, I've watched the sum total of nothing this week. We've got some downtime this weekend so I suspect we'll watch a couple more episodes of Shrinking followed by the finale of this season's Great British Bake Off (or The Great British Baking Show for those in other jurisdictions).
